Far From Homecast + Extras!

We’re talking Spider-Man: Far From Home!

Take a breather, true believers, Mysterio is actually here in a real life movie and we are kind of beside ourselves. Are we too giddy to actually evaluate whether or not this is a good movie? Does Jake Gyllenhaal go full Okja? What does Jack like more, Sam Raimi or trains?

It’s time to review the latest MCU entry, first with some non-spoiler thoughts, then at 39:26 we swing right in to SPOILER territory.

After that, we ran a little overboard and recorded another podcast – this time on the post-credit scenes, the future of the MCU, and more easter eggs!

Those two post-credit scenes sure were something, huh? We go into what went down and unpack what it could all mean, while Jack delves further into some of the comic book easter eggs, references and adaptations.

We’ve got plenty to say that didn’t make it into the FarFromHomeCast, from post-Endgame fatigue to speculation on what another Spider-Man movie would look like in the MCU.

Further notes

First up, the aliens that Jack spoke about  initially turned up in The Amazing Spider-Man #2, but were later revealed to be the inventions of Mysterio in Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #50.

It was ALIENS

Here are those ‘elementals’, paired up against what they’re referencing in the comics (sometimes it’s a long-shot).

Water elemental / Hydroman

spider-man: far from home

This is the most obvious one. There’s even a quickly-debunked rumour in the movie that the monster comes from a man who was caught underwater with an experimental generator – which is how the original Hydroman was created.

Earth elemental / Sandman

spider-man: far from home earth elemental sandman

Many have assumed that the fact we meet this earth elemental in a sandy area such as this makes him likely to be Sandman – but I’m not that convinced.

Fire elemental / Molten Man

moltenman

Another likely one. Molten Man wasn’t exactly firey in his first appearance, but he later became unstable and became a hot mess, so to speak.

Wind elemental / Cyclone

spider-man: far from home wind elemental

I wouldn’t have clocked this one if Fury didn’t specifically refer to it as ‘a cyclone’, then randomly started dropping the ‘a’ entirely. Couldn’t grab a shot of the briefly-seen wind elemental (spotted when MJ and Peter first discover a hologram), so instead grabbed a shot of the fusion elemental from the finale.

One note – in the podcast, I said he summons winds by running fast, comparing him to Quicksilver. I was super wrong. It’s just wind.

Dmitri

chameleon kraven dmitri

Dimitri is just a random S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in Far From Home, but his name made many think he was going to play Dmitri Smerdyakov AKA The Chameleon – Spider-Man’s very first supervillain.

On the other hand, actor Numan Acar looks a hell of a lot like Kraven – who just so happens to be Chameleon’s half-brother. Who knows, maybe it’s a bait and switch and it’ll be Chameleon whose first name is Sergei.

Betty and Ned Leeds

On the smaller side of things, Betty and Ned’s relationship was a little nod to the fact the two characters got married in the comics.

Mysterio

This might just be me, but the giant Mysterio punch from the hallucination segment reminded me a lot of The Amazing Spider-Man #67.

And as for that post-credit scene, it isn’t unusual to see J. Jonah Jameson calling Mysterio a hero in the same breath that he criticises Spidey.
