Best Movies and TV of 2019 All-Out Spectacular!

A look back on all the best movies and TV we watched in 2019. Not much superhero talk this time round!

2019 was a garbage year that we’re more than happy to leave behind – but there were some good things to distract us: Booksmart Little Women have their Knives Out, Irishman living the High Life, Beale St is Burning and maybe the real Parasite is Us.

Warning: we talk Star Wars, maybe for the last time.

Also covered: Midsommar, John Wick 3, The Last Black Man In San Francisco, Shazam, Glass, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Avengers: Endgame, Black Mirror, Watchmen, The Boys, Bojack Horseman, I Think You Should Leave, You, and… Game of Thrones.

Plus some bonus chat about Jack’s favourite comics he read in 2019!

S2E6 – Magic Mike Morbius

This week we’re covering season 2, episode 6 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series -‘Morbius’.

Spidey’s having some kidney problems, Mary Jane’s getting ghosted, and Michael Morbius is shooting radioactive rays at blood in a room full of vampire bats. What could go wrong?
Well, it turns out that a lot could go wrong – leading to a few extra limbs, horrifying octopus palm suckers, and a whole lot of plasma missing from the bodies of ESU students. This is what happens when you leave the neogenic recombinator lying around – and this episode shows that the plot gun might also just be an infinity stone.
After that, Jack reveals the veritable monster mash that Morbius originated from in our comic book segment – before we talk about that new Morbius 2020 trailer! #VetoThatLeto

S2E5 – Swole Mutant Bathhouse | Mutants’ Revenge

This week we’re covering season 2, episode 5 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series -‘Mutant’s Revenge’.

We’ve got a crazy episode for you guys this week, with the X-Men crossover two-parter coming to a close with plenty of buddy cop shenanigans, trash fights, awful puns, henchman juggling and more hallways than a Netflix Marvel series.

Jack talks reading The Clone Saga, Henry gets turned into the Beast, Hobgoblin records his own voice acting, Ray Winstone makes a guest appearance, and Smythe punched right in the kisser.

After all that nonsense, we talk about ‘Spider-Man: The Mutant Agenda’ – the mini-series that inspired this episode.

S2E4 – The Mutant Agenda | Beats By Beast

This week we’re covering season 2, episode 4 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – ‘The Mutant Agenda’.

X-Cuse me, true believers – we’ve got another episode to talk about, this time the most ambitious crossover in history; the birth of a televisual universe; a racism allegory that goes off the rails; a cheese nightmare, if you will. Uncle Ben ghost stealth takedown’s included.

Confused? So are we. This episode brings Spidey to the X-Men’s mansion, where he is chased by their superior theme tune music, then hounded by that stupid sexy beast. No, it’s not Ray Winstone, it’s Henry McCoy – the OG furry, professor of prejudice patience and lover of thongs.

S2E3 – Hydro-Man | #NotAllHydroMen

This week we’re covering season 2, episode 3 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – ‘Hydro Man’.

Face front, true believers! This week we’re talking about Morris Bench aka Spider-Man’s most compelling and fascinating villain!

Just kidding – he’s Hydro-Man, a D-Lister that this episode of Spider-Man: The Animated Series somehow found a way to make interesting. How do they do it, you ask? By putting the Bro in Hybro Man and talking about… male entitlement?

This episode has everything: MRAs, the seduction community, Nice Guy™s, anime screams, water puns and ocean science magic.

And in our comic origin segment, Jack tells Henry all about Hydro-Man’s first comic appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #212 (1980), before updating him on all the pathetic things he’s been up to in the years since.

We Pitch A SINISTER SIX Movie

This week we’re discussing the potential Sinister Six movie and how it could play out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Both Jack and Henry have their own ideas for what a Sinister Six movie and which villains should turn up – but only one of them made notes, and by notes, we meant notes. So what will this all entail? Will it be about Tony Stark again? Will Jack be talking about the Man-Thing… again? If you’ve listened before, you probably know the answer – but there are plenty more surprises in store as we discuss our favourite evil team-up.

S2E2 -The Fast & The Insidious

This week we’re covering S2E2 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – ‘The Battle of the  Insidious Six’.

Face front, true believers! We’ve got one hell of an episode for you, with the conclusion to the Insidious Six’s Matchstick Men con-gone-wrong.

Spider-Man is unmasked, Chameleon is letting off steam, Rhino’s like a wrecking ball, Scorpion is still getting bullied, Shocker is naked, Silvermane is getting in the Christmas spirit, Doc Ock is exasperated… and Mysterio is a house plant. Meanwhile, Jack is still mad about Karen Page and Henry is doing Tommy Wiseau impressions… again.

After we talk through another episode of Spider-Man: The Animated Series, we turn to the comics to talk about ‘The Return of The Sinister Six’ – where Doc Ock goes full Walter White, Hobgoblin’s let himself go, Henry has questions, and Jack has an asthma attack trying to answer them.

S2E1 – The Insidious Six | N’SIDIOUS

We’re back for Season Two!

This week we’re covering S2E1 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – ‘The Insidious Six’.

We’re back for the second season and jumping right into the Sinister – I mean INSIDIOUS Six. The Neogenic plot gun is looming overhead, but first the webhead’s greatest villains (and Shocker) have banded together to create an all-new boyband, headsets included.

This leads to a lot of in-fighting, buffoonery, and a ludicrous caper worthy of the Coen Brothers. Meanwhile, Smythe has to make do with his unpaid internship.

Then we jump into yet another comic origin – this time looking back to The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, where Doctor Octopus first assembles the Sinister Six. Spoilers: six grown men fail to kill a teenager.

Spectacular Spider-Man #1-100 Review

Hey – podcast co-host Jack here! I’m going to start reviewing on a bulk scale since I’m going through aaaallll these Spider-Man issues at the moment and have some thoughts. It’s interesting to note how they fluctuate over their runs with different teams coming in and out.

The Spectacular Spider-Man (or as it was known at this point: Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man) series’ first hundred issues (1976-84) takes a long time to get into the swing of things. At first, it’s effectively B-sides to the main Amazing Spider-Man series and unfortunately ends up falling into the trap of becoming an entire series of filler storylines.

MCU Phase 4 Updates & Podcast Episode!

Listen to our new episode – MCU Phase 4: Love & Fatigue!

Comic Con and D23 brought all kinds of announcements for Marvel, with Phase Four of the MCU looking to be pretty interesting.

After talking about the Sony-Disney deal falling through in our last episode, Henry and Jack weigh in with their thoughts on the movies and shows lined up, what we think they’ll entail, and what the overall arc of the universe will be from now on – all while giving Hawkeye the side-eye.
