S4E5 – Three Men and a Boss Baby

This time we’re talkin’ season 4, episode 5 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – Partners!

After a break between episodes due to some non-neogenic life events, Henry and Jack are back to talk about maybe the most outrageous episode of the show so far. We’ve got some spider-creepin’, cyborg humilation, and the one and only Crime Boss Baby: Silvermane. As well as investigating the science of baby geniuses and armchair therapising Alisa and Alistair, we get waylaid by the true titular partners of the episode, the neogenic odd couple – aka a cohabiting Vulture and Scorpion. The trenchcoat economy is back in business, baby.

Alongside a cavalcade of returning plot threads from early seasons, we delve into some of the voices behind the cartoon and briefly flashback to some Silvermane comic stories that do not involve talking babies.

What makes a good comic adaptation?

Calypso’s Comic History

Calypso has only 18 appearances in Marvel comics (as far as I’m aware), but she goes through a hell of a lot of changes during that time. S4E4 – Somehow, Kraven Returned

This time we’re talkin’ season 4, episode 3 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – The Return of Kraven!

The third entry in the loose trilogy of Kraven appearances is here to be side-tracked by conversations about racism and Bananaman. But back to the episode, we’ve got a mysterious creature on the loose and a hunt through the jungles of New York to find it. What is this, season 1?

Kraven has returned, again, somehow. No comic backstory this time and to Jack’s surprise no voodoo. But don’t worry, that just means we’ve got one in the chamber for Weird Lore BS Corner… once we silence those darn bongos…

S4E3 – You’re The Black Cat Now, Dog

This time we’re talkin’ season 4, episode 3 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – The Black Cat!

Henry forgot his microphone, Jack tries not to die, and the Kingpin has yet another OnlyFISK venture – this time with more cat outfits. As if this episode couldn’t get more inappropriate, Peter gets an STI from a rooftop encounter with a strange woman who may just be benefiting from the proportional sexiness of a Steve Rogers, perfects the mid-air spoon, then tries out some stripper clothes. SHIELD, bless them, are doing their best.

In our comic origins segment we talk about Felicia Hardy’s first appearance in 1979, which is both spectacularly goofy, relentlessly horny, and monumentally depressing.

S4E2 – OnlyFISK 2.0: Prison Peepers | The Cat

This week we’re covering season 4, episode 2 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – The Cat!

After some tangents into Jack’s dreams and Henry’s masochistic movie-watching, we dive into a tale of WW2 spies, Sam Eliot lookalikes and a new addition to the OnlyFISK lineup. Yes, it’s a sequel. Also, Doc Ock is here. Maybe he’ll be less embarrassed if we pretend we didn’t see him.

Moving on from Nick Fury’s ramshackle operation, we briefly talk about The Cat’s origins in the comics as well as his mentor, Black Fox. Oh, and there’s an update on Mud-Thing! For all you Weird Loreheads.

S4E1 – If The Diaper Doesn’t Fit, You Must Acquit | Guilty

This week we’re covering season 4, episode 1 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – Guilty!

Robbie Robertson, the reigning dad of last season, is drawing a glock again – but this time it’s a lazer gun, and he has no idea how it ended up in his hands. But there’s a man that would risk his neck for his brother man, who won’t cop out when there’s danger all about: Jigsaw Jameson.

JJ dons the original trench coat and fedora, suiting up into his alt costume as the hero this city deserves. After all, this is a town with gaslighting cabbies, the irredeemable Baby Joe’s, and a place where Robbie Robertson of all people is considered a lucky man.

For our comics segment we talk about the Spectacular J. Jonah Jameson noir story from 1983, then jump into Joe “Robbie” Robertson’s origins as a Lee-Romita creation, while Jack figures out just how many times he’s quit the Bugle, been fired from the Bugle, and how many times he’s fired our down-on-his-luck photographer. All of the reasons are insane.
