Silvermane’s Comic Origins

We spoke about Silvermane’s appearance in Spider-Man: The Animated Series in our recent episode, but what about his origins in Marvel comics?

Silvio Manfredi aka Silvermane first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #73 (1969), written by Stan Lee and with art by John Buscema.

S2E12 – Ravages of Time|Once Upon A Time Poncho

This week we’re covering season 2, episode 12 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – ‘The Ravages of Time’.

Silvermane wants to live until the totally-not-barren cultural landscape of the 2000s with his time pyramid and time poncho at the ready – but before then he’ll have to go up against the ED-209 of this show, the Mega Slayer. Before long, we’ve got a cavalcade of kidnappings, Clark Kent acrobatics and a pitch for a new Ted Danson project.

Despite his sleep deprivation, Jack has some comic book origins to discuss too – with the wild ride of Silvermane’s tragic unbirth and Pro Evo cyborg body breaking Henry’s brain.

S2E11 – The Meatball of Crime | The Tablet of Time

This week we’re covering season 2, episode 11 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – ‘The Tablet of Time’.

Spencer Smythe is rolling in his grave after his son makes a humanoid ultimate battle robot, J3 is back on air, Hammerhead is butting into a gang war over a magical artifact and Silvermane is… old. Super old.

The Kingpin shows off his glorious fat muscles and we get side-tracked talking about his diet. Meatballs aside, we’ve got an all-new monstar making this cavalcade of characters even more jam-packed: the jive-talking Tombstone. Truly, everyone is here.

We then move on to a trilogy of comic origins (pray for Jack), including 1969’s tablet of time story, 1972’s Hammerhead debut, and the appearance of Smythe’s patented mega-slayer/mk. 14 robot in 1992 (check out the further notes for some comic panels).

Blade Anime Review

Brought to animation and taken far, far away from the hands of David S Goyer, Blade the Anime sees our titular vampire hunter travel through Asia, fighting different kinds of vampire, but the Daywalker (voiced by Harold Perineau) is not alone this time.

We’ve got a human sidekick that doesn’t suck, appearances from Van Helsing and goddamn Wolverine, but the most powerful character in this series is Razor, the vampire-hunting dog that truly does not give a f*ck.

So, join us on a journey through the Blade anime, where we discuss how Mahershala Ali’s upcoming film could learn a thing or two, and finally have the discussion you’ve all been waiting for: which of the on-screen Blades has the largest sex appeal? Spoiler: Kirk “Sticky Fingaz” Jones does not rank highly.

Blade: The Series retrospective review

If this is the first time you’re hearing of Blade: The Series, there’s definitely a reason for that. Blade: The Series is David S. Goyer’s rock bottom, and considering he wrote the screenplays for Batman vs Superman, this is no mean feat.

In fact, Blade: The Series is rock bottom for everyone involved. Even Kirk “Sticky Fingaz” Jones, whose substandard job replacing Wesley Snipes as Blade is somehow both the pinnacle and nadir of his short and storied acting career.

On the latest addition to the That ’90s Spider-Man Show Patreon feed, Jack and Henry groan, sigh and complain their way through Blade: The Series, where middle-aged vampire moms terrorise the public, the main villain slowly realises his character was probably a Nazi, and we see how the transition to the small screen made Blade a far less effective fighter (unless, of course, he’s up against a pregnant woman).

Blade: Trinity Retrospective

For our latest Patreon episode, we talked about the third movie in the Blade series!

Blade kicked off the 21st century superhero trend, so it’s only fitting that it also kicked off the trend of disappointing superhero threequels. But while most superhero trilogies are content with confusing and convoluted conclusions, Blade: Trinity looks at the likes of The Dark Knight Rises or Spider-Man 3 and says: “Hold my beer, motherfucker.”

This time around on the Patreon feed, That ’90s Spider-Man Show is talking Blade: Trinity, and somehow, it’s worse than its reputation. We chat about the impact of David S Goyer, we discuss whether Samuel L Jackson has genuine competition in the motherfucker-saying category, and we question why we needed to see Ryan Reynolds’ pubes.

Plus: we delve into the crazy, litigation-heavy fever dream that was the Blade: Trinity production, where Wesley Snipes tragically became the motherfucker who ice-skated uphill. Featuring sex scene rumours, choking, controversial T-Shirts and a surprise cameo from Ron Perlman! Are you #TeamWesley? Jack is. And then he isn’t. And then he is. And then… you get the picture.

S2E10 – The Immortal Vampire / Calamity Jared Mega Evolution

This week we’re covering season 2, episode 10 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series – ‘The Immortal Vampire’.

More like the immortal plotline, amirite?

This week we get to see Morbius finally evolve into his true Calamity Jared Form, but only after we cross off every single square on our Morbius bingo cards so many times that it catches fire. Meanwhile, Blade and Det. Lee have a meet-cute, Peter is a dumb-dumb and Whistler shares too much.

After that, we discuss Untold Tales of Spider-Man #2 (1995), which saw the introduction of the little known character of Batwing.

And remember gang, knowing Spider-Man does not make you cool.
